Step 3: Edit

Once you have downloaded a template, extract the files contained in the zip file to a location on your computer. Next, use an HTML editor to open the "index.html" file.

If you are using a WYSIWYG editor such as Microsoft Frontpage or Adobe Dreamweaver, you will see real-time results as you modify the page's content. Text editors such as Notepad and Wordpad will only allow you to view and modify your template in its raw HTML state. Those who are familiar with HTML may use Notepad are a similar text editor to edit their web site.

Step 4: Save

Your "index.html" file is the first web page users will see when they visit your website. The first page of a website typically includes an introduction, welcome message, or mission statement. All web pages within your site must be saved to the root directory (in the same folder as index.html). All images should be placed in the "images" folder.

Step 5: Upload

Once you are finished editing a particular web page, or if you want to upload your website for the first time, you have a few options that will allow you to connect to the web server. You will connect to the web server via FTP.

Microsoft Frontpage (and most other WYSIWYG editors) has built-in FTP functionality. To connect to your personal web space on the Fullerton College web server, follow the FTP instructions found on the tutorials page.
